What Level 2 Adds
Beyond L1 β what the Level 2 qualification covers
ATTMA Level 1 qualifies you to test simple residential and single-zone buildings to TSL1. Level 2 extends that scope to non-simple buildings under TSL2 β larger, more complex, and requiring more advanced testing methodology.
The Core Difference
Multi-fan testing, complex envelope assessment, and commercial-scale reporting.
Standard L1 testing uses a single fan and a straightforward pressurisation sequence. Commercial buildings require multiple simultaneous fans, careful pressure uniformity management across large volumes, and reporting frameworks that satisfy Green Star and building compliance assessors. Level 2 covers all of this β and the planning and execution skills that make complex tests work on the day.
What the Level 2 course addresses
- 01 Multi-fan test methodology β planning and conducting tests using multiple fans simultaneously to achieve uniform pressure across large or compartmentalised buildings. Fan placement, pressure distribution, and validity checks specific to TSL2.
- 02 Non-simple building configurations β airtightness testing for open-plan commercial floors, multi-zone buildings, retail, industrial units, and buildings with complex HVAC penetrations and envelope transitions.
- 03 Green Star compliance testing β understanding what Green Star requires from an airtightness test result, how to structure the test to satisfy the rating tool, and what goes into a Green Star-compliant test report.
- 04 Pre-test planning for complex buildings β site assessments, equipment specification, fan quantity calculations, logistical planning, and coordination with site teams for large commercial tests.
- 05 Reporting for commercial clients and assessors β test reports for commercial projects must satisfy multiple stakeholders. Understanding what certifiers, Green Star assessors, and building owners need from the report β and presenting it correctly β is a core L2 skill.

FAQ
Common questions
Do I need to hold ATTMA L1 to enrol?
Yes. ATTMA Level 1 certification is required before enrolling in the Level 2 course. The L2 builds directly on L1 knowledge and testing practice. If you are not yet L1 certified, complete the L1 course first β online theory can be started at any time at beoscience.com/attma-l1course.
How is the practical workshop different from the L1 workshop?
The L2 practical workshop is two days (compared to one day for L1) and is conducted on a commercial building rather than a residential one. The focus shifts to multi-fan setup and coordination, pressure uniformity management across large volumes, and producing reports that satisfy Green Star and commercial compliance requirements.
Does the L2 qualification qualify me for Green Star airtightness testing?
Yes. ATTMA Level 2 certification qualifies you to conduct airtightness tests on non-simple buildings in accordance with TSL2, which is the required standard for Green Star compliance testing in NZ and AU. The course specifically covers Green Star reporting requirements so you understand what the rating tool assessor needs from your test report.
Where are workshops held and how often?
Workshops are held in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown every 8β12 weeks. Planned 2026 dates: Auckland (February), Wellington (April), Christchurch (October), Queenstown (November). Final dates to be confirmed β register your interest to be notified first.
What if I don't pass the exam first time?
An exam resit is available at $750 + GST, covering the full exam day β both written and practical components. Resits are scheduled alongside regular workshop dates. You'll receive written feedback after the first attempt to help you prepare.
Can I take L2 and PH+ at the same time?
Yes. The ATTMA PH+ course is fully online and self-paced β there's no reason you can't work through the PH+ theory alongside your L2 theory module, and sit both when ready. They cover different technical standards (TSL2 for L2, TSL4 for PH+) and complement each other well for testers working across both commercial and Passive House projects.
