FAQ
Common questions
Is any prior experience required to enrol?
No. The course is designed to take you from no airtightness experience to full ATTMA Level 1 certification. The online Module 1 covers all foundational knowledge before the practical workshop. Building professionals with construction or compliance backgrounds typically find the theory very accessible.
How long does the online theory module take?
The theory module is self-paced with no time limit. Most students work through it across several sessions over one to two weeks. You can return to any section as many times as needed before sitting the exam.
Where are workshops held and how often?
Workshops are held in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown every 8–12 weeks. The practical exam is scheduled alongside each workshop intake. Register your interest to be notified of upcoming dates — places fill quickly.
What do I receive on completing the course?
On passing both the written and practical exams, you receive your ATTMA Level 1 credential — the recognised qualification for airtightness testing in NZ and AU. You will be listed on the ATTMA tester register and can begin conducting certified blower door tests immediately.
What is the difference between ATTMA L1 and ATTMA PH+?
The ATTMA L1 course covers standard residential and simple building testing under TSL1, and is delivered in person across NZ. The PH+ course covers the specialist requirements of ATTMA TSL4 — Passive House and low energy building testing — with a focus on internal treated volume methodology and Passive House certification reporting. It is fully online. The L1 is the starting point; PH+ extends scope for Passive House work. You can add the PH+ at any point once you hold your L1 registration.
Is the qualification recognised in Australia?
Yes. ATTMA operates across NZ and AU, and the Level 1 credential is recognised in both jurisdictions. Workshops are currently held in NZ only — Australian participants are welcome to travel for the in-person components, or enquire about in-country delivery.
